Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (2019)

Boots on the Ground

History doesn’t always have to be relayed blandly through textbooks. In fact, more often than not they come to life outside the classroom. My Community’s tours for students take the young on routes across Singapore’s old towns and culturally rich enclaves, enthralling them with stories of their ancestors and predecessors. The aim? To cement their interest in local heritage.

Students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts’s diploma in arts management were taken on a customised tour of the Museum @ My Queenstown. My Community’s guides recounted the story of Queenstown and walked them through the estate’s various milestones to expand their understanding of Singapore’s tangible and intangible heritage and the role people play in shaping a community.

Thereafter, participants were taken through the basics of tour guiding. The capacity building workshop, titled Managing Heritage, was oriented towards heritage trail development. It covered topics such as content and tour development as well as audience management.
