Queenstown’s 61st Anniversary Concert wAS be graced by a star-studded cast of performers which included former Queenstown residents such as Brian Richmond, veteran singer Wang Qing Yuan, 958FM deejay Huang Shujun and Dr Liang Wern Fook and popular artistes such as Chen Wei Lian. The concert was held at Tanglin Halt Community Plaza (Next to Block 46-2 Tanglin Halt Road) on Saturday, 27 September 2014.

Brian Richmond, 67, former national football player and popular radio deejay, was a former resident at Block 80 Strathmore Avenue in the 1960s. He remembers the itinerant hawkers offering scrumptious street-side hawker fare next to his flat vividly and these sarabat stalls were his favourite hang-out places in Queenstown, “These itinerant hawkers were fondly known as the sarabat stalls because they were run by Indians. They would sell their coffee, tea and curry puffs. My friends and I would sit at the sarabat stall and look at the people walking by. I noticed this girl wearing a uniform of River Valley Government Chinese Middle School coming back from school. So we began whistling. One of my friends was very interested to know her but he dared not approach her. Eventually, she fell for me.” This girl was Susanne, who would be Brian’s future wife.

Liang Wern Fook, 49, a household artiste among Xinyao music lovers, was a former resident at Margaret Drive. His family moved to a 2-room rental apartment in Margaret Close in 1964 before shifting to a flat on Block 6C Margaret Drive. He moved out of Queenstown in 1987. “When I wrote my essays and songs, I derived inspiration from my growing up days in Queenstown. I remembered visiting the weekly pasar malams and venturing into the canopies beyond Margaret Drive.” In his songs, Singapore Pie (Chinese: 新加坡派) and 麻雀衔竹枝, he mentioned about his childhood memories at Queenstown. The lyrics in Singapore Pie, “The old cinemas are now churches holding Sundays” refers to the iconic Golden City and Venus Theatres located next to his block.
