Explore Queenstown’s Favourite Musical Show in the 1960s and 1970s
Check out Singapore’s favourite Getai performer, Liu Ling Ling, this September! Getai is a mini variety show performed during religious events such as Hungry Ghost Festival which brandishes comedy skits performed by amateur actors and contemporary Mandarin songs by nonprofessional singers. Ithad mimicked those popular Mandarin television programmes in the 1960s that featured an eclectic mix of engaging performances.
Getai performances grew in tandem with local television and became a popular consumerist culture that supplanted Chinese street opera as the mainstream form of entertainment during Hungry Ghost Festival.
